I’ve always loved my morning coffee so I really wanted to find out what effect caffeine may have on my unborn baby.

Coffee would be the main source of caffeine I have but it’s good to remember that it’s also found in tea, chocolate, soft drinks and energy drinks.

I think with any of these stimulants it’s best to cut them out of your diet while you are pregnant, but it does seem that having caffeine in moderation is ok.

So, what is moderation?

Research suggests that 200 grams of caffeine a day is ok during pregnancy.

200 grams is roughly one strong cup of espresso coffee, three cups of instant coffee and approx. three cups of medium strength tea.

But what are the potential risks?

Studies say that higher levels of caffeine intake may make it harder to fall pregnant and may increase the chances of miscarriage.

There’s also some evidence to suggest that higher levels of caffeine can result in babies being smaller during pregnancy and at child birth. This can lead to some medical complications at birth and potential longer-term health issues.

The upshot of all this is that you can still enjoy your cup of coffee or tea. Just be mindful of how many you’re having and probably best try to keep it to one a day.
